Signature, Keegan, 1st Stage Top Helen Hayes Award Recipients
Review by Susan Berlin | Season Schedule

Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia received a total of six Helen Hayes Awards at the 41st annual award ceremony, held May 19 at the Anthem in Washington. The Keegan Theatre in Washington and 1st Stage in McLean, Virginia each received the next highest total, four.

The Nance at 1st Stage received all four of the company's awards, while Signature's honors were split among four for Private Jones and one each for Where the Mountain Meets the Sea and Soft Power. Keegan's productions of Merrily We Roll Along and Noises Off each received two awards.

This year's awards, in 41 categories, recognized 165 eligible productions presented during the 2024 calendar year, including 57 musicals, 108 plays, and 37 world premieres. The organization presents awards in parallel tracks: "Hayes," for productions with a larger number of Actors' Equity contracts; and "Helen," for those with fewer Equity contracts. Signature is in the Hayes category while Keegan and 1st Stage are in the Helen category.

For the third year, the acting awards were adjudicated as gender inclusive, with 10 or 11 nominees and two recipients in each performance category

Outstanding production honors went to Jaja's African Hair Braiding from Arena Stage, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, and Chicago Shakespeare Theater (Play, Hayes); 1st Stage's The Nance (Play, Helen); Mexodus from Mosaic Theater Company and Baltimore Center Stage (Musical, Hayes); and Keegan's Merrily We Roll Along (Musical, Helen). SIX at the National Theatre was recognized for Non-Resident Production, and Imagination Stage's Petite Rouge: A Cajun Red Riding Hood was honored as Theatre for Young Audiences.

Actor, producer, and political activist Robert Hooks received the Helen Hayes Tribute for his efforts to increase the visibility and representation of Black voices in the arts during the Civil Rights Era. In addition to his work in film and television, Hooks founded three Black theatre companies: two in New York City, the Group Theatre Workshop and Negro Ensemble Company, and the DC Black Repertory Company in Washington.

Following is the complete list of Helen Hayes Award nominees and recipients. Award recipients are designated in bold. For more information, visit www.theatrewashington.org.
