Regional Reviews: Raleigh/Durham A Ride Through the Country
Mr. Kennedy is well-known for his acclaimed work as a director and choreographer for the Opera House Theatre Company at Thalian Hall over the years. He has just recently begun a career as a playwright as well. This is his third foray, with his others being The Thursday Night Bridge Circle and Lessons at the Piano. A Ride Through the Country is based on the true events of Louie, a matriarch of a rural, Southern family who has been diagnosed with cancer. For her to receive treatments, she must be driven regularly to her doctor on a 90-minute round trip by various family and friends. Along the way, memories are shared, hearts are bared, and the truth of the human experience witnessed. The cast is headed by the wonderful Debra Gillingham as Mother Louie. She, as well as the entire cast, tugs at the heartstrings and brings laughter through tears. Mr. Kennedy is at home framing Southern charm and humor in his plays. Under Holli Saperstein and Steven Vernon's direction, the play harkens loving homages to other well-known plays with Southern matriarchs such as Steel Magnolias and Driving Miss Daisy. The technical crew provide quality work with set design by Terry Collins, costumes by Marian Kennedy, lighting design from Pi Starsong, and sound by director Steven Vernon. A Ride Through the Country celebrates those important times when memories and laughter get us through the hard times. It reminds us that we are not alone in this experience we call life. And with family and friends to keep us company, it makes the ride all the more bearable. A Ride Through the Country, presented by Big Dawg Productions, runs through July 20, 2025, at Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts, Ruth and Bucky Stein Theatre, 310 Chestnut St., Wilmington NC.
