Set in the late 1970s, the story follows the band as they attempt to record their next album in a California studio. The ensemble includes drummer Simon (a delightful Cornelius McMoyler), who provides the emotional heart of the team, married couple Reg (portrayed with a nuanced complexity by Christopher Mowod) and Holly (the charming Emilie Kouatchou) on bass and keyboards/vocals, and Peter (a commanding Denver Milord) and Diana (a silver-voiced Claire Dejean) on guitar and vocals. The band is joined by sound engineers Grover and Charlie (portrayed perfectly by Jack Barrett and Steven Lee Johnson), who provide much needed levity to break up the tension within scenes and provide an outsider's view of the complexity of artistic collaboration. Over the course of a year, personal conflicts and creative differences start to mount up, turning the recording process into a turbulent and emotionally charged experience. Composer Will Butler of the indie rock band Arcade Fire provides the dynamic music and a sense of authenticity to the production. Running over three hours, the production features characters that are rich and complex. The original Broadway production made history, receiving 13 Tony Award nominations (the most ever for a play). It ultimately took home five Tonys, including Best Play and Best Direction of a Play. The design team elevates this play to another level. David Zinn's Tony-winning scenic design complements the storytelling and authentically recreates a recording studio of the 1970s. Costumes by Enver Chakartash are also evocative of the era and help define character and tone. Jiyoun Chang's lighting design masterfully guides audiences focus, highlighting emotional beats and changes in time to great effect. And Tony-winning sound design by Ryan Rumery adds richness and immersiveness, creating a world that is alive in rhythm and sound. The combination of cast and creative team creates a theatrical experience that is captivating. With its compelling drama, meticulous production design, and immersive music, Stereophonic is a tour-de-force that will resonate with theatre enthusiasts and music lovers alike.
